We use energy to do work and make all movements. When we eat, our bodies transform the food into energy to do work. When we run or walk or do some work, we ‘burn’ energy in our bodies. Cars, planes, trolleys, boats, and machinery also transform energy into work. Work means moving or lifting something, warming or lighting something. There are many sources of energy that help to run the various machines invented by man.

In thermal physics, heat transfer is the passage of thermal energy from a hot to a cold body. When a physical body, e.g. an object or fluid, is at a different temperature than its surroundings or another body, transfer of thermal energy, also known as heat transfer, occurs in such a way that the body and the surroundings reach thermal equilibrium. Heat transfer always occurs from a hot body to a cold one, a result of the second law of thermodynamics. Heat transfer can never be stopped; it can only be slowed down.

Whenever you push, pull, stretch, squash, bend, twist or tear something you are exerting a force. A force can:

make something move
speed something up
make something stop or slow down
change the shape of things

Some forces need to be touching to occur, while others can occur at a distance. eg. gravity

Forces can be measured using a SPRING BALANCE. The units of force are NEWTONS.

Energy is measured in Joules (J). A kJ is one thousand joules, just like a km is a thousand metres.

If two forces are balanced then the object they are acting on will be either:

will continue moving at a constant speed.

However, when forces are unbalanced an object will change its:

In this video ‘Elmo’ is the fuel as he is made of flammable material, he is also doused in a flammable liquid which is classed as potential energy. When ‘Tickle-Me Elmo’ is burning he is producing Heat energy and Light energy. ‘Tickle-Me Elmo’ also runs on batteries, which are the source of his movement, this is kinetic energy.
